Up For a Game of Polo?

No, no, not Marco Polo in the pool, although that would make a fine alternative on a hot desert day. I’m talking about a game of polo with horses, jockeys and the like at the Empire Polo Club! With Valentine’s Day on a Monday this year, what better way to impress your lover than by breaking out a comfy blanket, packing up a picnic and opening a bottle of rosé as you watch a world-class polo match unfold before you the Sunday before? Talk about Pretty Woman!

Empire Polo Club is located in Indio (the entrance is on Monroe Street at Avenue 51), and was founded in 1987. Domestic and international players converge on these grounds each year to play polo in the gorgeous desert climate. The fields are immaculately groomed, and being that winter in the desert is one of the most beautiful times of year with temperate weather and less crowds, this Sunday field trip makes a lot of sense if you’re in the area. Sunday Polo games are offered January 9th – March 27th, 2011, and there are two games at 12:00 p.m.  and 2:00 p.m., which is the featured match.  Even better—general admission is free. VIP seating and tailgating tickets are available at a charge.

I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday in the desert. I’ll think of any excuse to put on a wide-brimmed hat (although not required here, except for sun protection) and dress, and heading out to the Empire Polo Club for the day certainly fits the bill. It should be known though that most polo events in the U.S. are casual, and you’ll see people here dressed to the nines mixed up with those in flip flops and t-shirts. If it were me though, I’d go the dress-up route. Why not? You never know if after the game, your sweetie might be taking you out to a nice Sunday supper. And after your “Sundate,” why not head to Shield’s Date Garden since you’re in the area? Why, you ask? For a date shake!
